Workshop Description

The concept of “fractured blocks” is an extremely versatile, open-ended, simple cutting and piecing technique.  It adds a WOW factor that can be either subtle or bold depending on fabric and color selection.

In this 1-day workshop, participants will rotary cut and piece fractured blocks, arrange them on the design wall, and piece them into a small quilt or quilts.  Hand or machine appliqué can be added later -- or the quilt top can stand alone as an abstract piece.

The fractured block concept can be adapted to suit both traditional and contemporary approaches to quiltmaking.  Fractured blocks can be rotary cut or free cut; can serve as a background for appliqué or stand alone as an abstract quilt; can be cut from solid, hand-dyed, or commercial print fabric; can be high or low contrast depending on fabric choice; can comprise the entire quilt surface or be scattered randomly to add interest; and can be cut from new fabric or scraps.
